Joining Sewciable

Who is Sewciable for?

Sewciable started with sewing, but the makers kept arriving. Whether you’re brand new or decades in, if you create with fabric, fibre or thread, there’s a place for you here.

  • Sewists
  • Knitters
  • Crocheters
  • Weavers
  • Spinners
  • Embroiderers
  • Quilters
  • Felters
  • Pattern designers
  • Instructors
  • Fabric shops
  • Yarn shops
  • Indie dyers
  • Notions makers
  • Craft brands
  • … with new crafts and communities joining all the time!
How much does it cost?

After your first week free, Sewciable is just $1.99 USD/month (the price will be adjusted to your local price on the subscription screen in the app). We charge a small amount to cover our costs, so that you’re the customer, not the product.

When social media is free, companies make money and cover costs by selling your attention and data to advertisers - which leads to intrusive ads and manipulative algorithms designed to keep you scrolling, not to make you happy. That’s what ruined the other platforms. A small, low-cost monthly membership fee is how we keep the lights on, and how we can guarantee our promises to you.

How do I cancel my Sewciable subscription?

All Sewciable subscriptions are handled by the App Store and Google Play Store. Sewciable cannot add, edit or delete your subscription.

Cancelling an Apple subscription

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap your Sewciable subscription.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription, scrolling down if you need to find it. If there is no Cancel button, or you see an expiry message in red, the subscription is already cancelled.

Cancelling an Android subscription

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select your Sewciable subscription.
  5. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the on-screen prompts. You may be asked to choose a reason.

With either store you will keep access to Sewciable until the end of your current billing period.

Please note that uninstalling the app does not cancel your subscription - you need to cancel it in the store.

What happens to my account if I cancel my subscription?

If you cancel your Sewciable subscription, your account will still remain on the app until you delete it, however you will no longer be able to use Sewciable.

If you would like to delete your Sewciable account, you can do so by going into the settings on your profile page and scrolling to the bottom.

Please note that you may cancel or restart your Sewciable subscription at any time, however deleting your account is permanent and cannot be reversed.

What happens if I delete my Sewciable account?

If you request your account to be deleted before starting your subscription, and there is no content associated with your account, it will be deleted immediately.

When you request your account to be deleted, and you have content associated with your account, there is a 30-day cooling-off period in case you change your mind. If you do wish to cancel your deletion you must contact us at [email protected] before the period is up.

In compliance with GDPR standards, all deletions on Sewciable are permanent and irreversible. No data, record of deletions, or related content is kept.

What happens to my data when I delete my Sewciable account?

In compliance with GDPR standards, all deletions on Sewciable are permanent and irreversible.

If you delete your account or any content, no data, record of deletions, or related content is kept.

Store & connection errors

“The store isn’t available right now” error

When trying to subscribe to Sewciable, if the paywall screen shows the “Retry” button and no price, it means your phone couldn’t quite reach the App Store to load the membership details.

This is nearly always a small, temporary glitch. Here are a few things to try, in order, to clear it:

  1. Check Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → iTunes & App Store Purchases, and make sure In-app Purchases is set to “Allow.”
  2. Check your internet connection and switch off your VPN if you use one, then tap Retry again.
  3. Close the app completely and reopen it (swipe it away from your recent apps).
  4. If you’re using shared wi-fi (like at work) it can sometimes block apps, so try switching off wi-fi and using your mobile data instead.
  5. Double-check that you have a working payment method saved in your Apple account.
  6. If you’ve already subscribed and it’s still asking, tap “Restore Purchases” on that screen and you’ll be right back in.

If you continue to have issues after trying all of these steps, please email [email protected].

“Server unavailable” error

Messages about not being able to reach the server are usually a local internet connectivity issue.

These are a few things to try that have helped other members:

  1. Check your internet connection and switch off your VPN if you use one, then tap Retry again.
  2. Close the app completely and reopen it (swipe it away from your recent apps).
  3. If you’re using shared wi-fi (like at work) it can sometimes block apps, so try switching off wi-fi and using your mobile data instead.

Apple-specific additional steps

  1. Check Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → iTunes & App Store Purchases - just make sure In-app Purchases is set to “Allow.”
  2. Double-check that you have a working payment method saved in your Apple account.
  3. Check Settings → Apps → Sewciable and make sure Mobile Data is toggled on.

Android-specific additional steps

  1. Disable battery optimisation: if the Play Store is optimised to save battery, background updates are often halted. Go to Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Battery, and ensure it is set to “Unrestricted” or “Don’t optimise.”
  2. Remove from sleeping apps (Samsung devices): open Settings → Battery → Background usage limits, and ensure the Google Play Store app is not listed in the “Sleeping apps” section.
  3. Restart your phone: a quick reboot helps flush out suspended background processes that might be interfering with the update queue.
  4. Storage space: the Play Store requires free storage space to download and install apps. If your device is nearly full, auto-updates will pause.

If you continue to have issues after trying all of these steps, please email [email protected].

Connecting with friends

How do I share my Sewciable profile outside of the app?

To share your Sewciable profile outside of the app, tap the share button on the top right of your profile. This will offer you a number of options:

  1. Share Card. This generates an image with your profile information and a QR code that takes people directly to your profile if they have the app downloaded. If they don’t have the app yet, it will show them how to get it first. The card can be saved as an image, or shared directly on other platforms or via message.
  2. Share Profile Link. This generates a link to your profile that can be shared anywhere a link can be placed, as well as in messages. If they don’t have the app yet, it will show them how to get it first.
  3. Show QR Code. This generates a QR code over your profile that can be scanned by friends to find you on Sewciable. It’s intended to be used in person, but may also be screenshotted and shared as an image if you like.
How do I find friends from other platforms on Sewciable?

Sewciable has been built with a very heavy focus on privacy. As such, it does not scrape your phone or other apps for people to connect with.

On Sewciable you won’t have members suggested to you based on an algorithm, and will only see members you find through the app.

Many members use the same handle on Sewciable as on their other social media, so a good place to start is by searching for that username on Sewciable.

How do I find members on Sewciable?

Head to the Explore tab to find members to follow on Sewciable. You can view a list of the newest members as well as the most followed members.

To find a specific member, you can search for their name in the search bar.

Moderation, conflict & abuse

Community behaviour expectations

Sewciable has been created as a safe, positive and encouraging corner of the internet. Please conduct yourself in a manner consistent with that ethos. The old adage “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” is a good rule of thumb to follow.

For more detailed information on what behaviours are unacceptable on Sewciable, please refer to our Terms of Service. Breaches of conduct not consistent with the positive ethos of the Sewciable community may result in removal from the Sewciable community.

Can I post about my business on Sewciable?

Yes, you are welcome to share about your sewing- or fibre-craft-related business on Sewciable, as well as promoting product releases.

Businesses are not restricted from sharing content on Sewciable.

When we refer to the lack of advertising on Sewciable, we are referring to the fact that Sewciable does not use advertisements to fund the app, and members will not see unsolicited advertising anywhere on the app.

If a member chooses to follow a brand on Sewciable, they will see any promotional materials shared by the brand in their feed.

Blocking members

To block a member, you can do so either on their posts by tapping the triple-dot (···) menu and selecting Block, or on their profile by tapping the triple-dot menu and selecting Block.

When you block a member, they will not be notified that you have taken this action. You will both be removed from each other’s following list, and neither of you will be able to see the other’s content.

Reporting members

To report a member, you can do so either on their posts by tapping the triple-dot (···) menu and selecting Report, or on their profile by tapping the triple-dot menu and selecting Report.

When a member of Sewciable is reported, an investigation into the content of the report is initiated. As the reporter, you may be contacted for more detail if it isn’t evident to the Sewciable team on inspection.

All reports are taken very seriously. Sewciable’s number one goal is to keep the community a safe, encouraging and welcoming space for everyone. Breaches of conduct that are not consistent with the positive ethos of the Sewciable community may result in removal from the app.

Suspension

If more than 5 reports or blocks against your account are received by the Sewciable team, your account may be suspended to protect the community. If you believe this has happened to you in error, please contact us at [email protected].

To remove a suspension, you will need to demonstrate no ill intent.

If your account is suspended, it is up to you to cancel your subscription.

Features & bugs

How do I request a feature?

We’re constantly adding to Sewciable and are always happy to receive feature requests. First, check whether your idea is already answered by any of our Help Centre articles.

To request a feature, head to your profile settings and use the “Request a feature” form.

Feature requests are reviewed periodically and are implemented if they’re requested by enough Sewciable members and are consistent with Sewciable’s values.

Reporting bugs

First, check whether your issue is answered by any of our Help Centre articles.

To report a bug or an issue with the operation of Sewciable, head to your profile settings and use the “Report a bug” form.

How does the “All Caught Up” feature work?

The “All Caught Up” marker is set when you open Sewciable, and loads in before any new content in your feed.

It does not keep track of which posts you’ve viewed, for a few reasons. One is data privacy. Another is that relying on what you’ve viewed could mean that, after a long absence or a personal screen-time decision, you end up with so many unseen posts that you never quite catch up on everything in your feed.

“All Caught Up” is therefore linked to the opening of the app, and shows you any new posts since you last opened it.

Posts in your feed never disappear and always appear in chronological order, so if you wish, you can scroll past the “All Caught Up” marker and keep viewing older posts.

Feature roadmap

Please note that this roadmap is not set in stone and is constantly evolving. It doesn’t include every feature requested, and may change at any time based on feedback from the community and the time constraints of our team.

An app update was announced but I didn’t get it automatically

If an update to Sewciable features was announced but you cannot see them on your device yet, then it is likely your device does not have automatic updates enabled.

Apple-specific suggestions

Head to Settings → Apps → App Store, and make sure App Updates is toggled on so apps update automatically.

Google Play-specific suggestions

  1. Enable auto-update: open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile picture in the top right, and go to Settings → Network Preferences → Auto-update apps.
  2. Enable individual app updates: sometimes specific apps are toggled off. Open the Google Play Store app, search for Sewciable, tap the three dots in the top right corner, and make sure Enable auto-update is toggled on.
  3. Reinstall the app: delete the Sewciable app and reinstall it from Google Play.
  4. Clear Play Store data: go to your device’s Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Storage, and tap Clear cache followed by Clear data.
  5. Disable battery optimisation: if the Play Store is optimised to save battery, background updates are often halted. Go to Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Battery, and ensure it is set to “Unrestricted” or “Don’t optimise.”
  6. Remove from sleeping apps (Samsung devices): open Settings → Battery → Background usage limits, and ensure the Google Play Store app is not listed in the “Sleeping apps” section.
  7. Restart your phone: a quick reboot helps flush out suspended background processes that might be interfering with the update queue.
  8. Storage space: the Play Store requires free storage space to download and install updates. If your device is nearly full, auto-updates will pause.

Compatibility

Can I use Sewciable on my tablet?

Yes. Sewciable has been designed to be enjoyed on phones and tablets alike.

Is there a web version?

Not yet. We’re focused on making the best possible native app experience first. This also makes it easier for us to protect app content from being scraped by AI on the web.

The app is available on iOS and Android, and can be downloaded on phones, tablets and Macs as a native app.

I have both an Apple and an Android device, will I be charged twice?

Once you have an active Sewciable subscription attached to your account, you should be able to use the app on any device with the same login details without incurring further subscription costs.

If this isn’t working properly for you, please email us at [email protected].

Multiple logins

Multiple logins to the same profile (for example, in the case of a business with several employees) is not currently supported.

Transparency

Sewciable is neutral

Everyone who loves sewing and fibre crafts is welcome to join Sewciable.

Sewciable is a neutral entity and promises inclusivity and equal treatment for all members. Personal politics and beliefs are irrelevant to Sewciable membership. No-one receives special treatment, and no-one is excluded.

As it is transparent by design (we don’t have a feed or Explore algorithm and never will) and because the business model is honest and transparent (a monthly fee means no advertisers or business interests), there really isn’t anywhere to hide secret political bias.

It’s the one social media platform where you don’t have to worry about secret bias, because there are no secret parts to hide the bias in. We did that by design - that’s the whole point.

You choose what you see - not us.

Does Sewciable donate to charity?

Because Sewciable is a community group, it does not donate to charity, as we cannot guarantee that the charities chosen would reflect the values and priorities of all members.

As such, Sewciable does not and will not donate to any charitable or non-profit organisations.

Can I have a private account?

All accounts are public. This keeps the community transparent and open. It’s a community for sharing and connecting, not hiding.

Are there DMs?

Sewciable does not offer direct messaging. All conversations happen in the open through comments. This reduces toxicity and keeps things community-focused.

In addition, there are numerous technical challenges with implementing direct messaging in an app, and it opens up many legal and ethical implications, such as government reporting requirements and moderation.

For now, we are a teeny-tiny two-person team and know we can’t be everything - there are really great message apps out there that have put all of their investment into doing messaging really well.
